New on 500px : Field of Dreams by JoelHammond by JoelHammond

This image was taken through a safety net so you will notice some lines. I hope you like it and the differences I’ve mentioned.

This is Higarigaoka Park in Tokyo. The park is where I’ve been taking many of the floral shots I’ve posted. The park includes a bird sanctuary,
picnic areas, event areas, gardens, and baseball fields. This photo shows conservative use of land space. If you have played baseball in
the US, you are might be used to grass infields and a homerun fence. That was my experience. This field, like most in Tokyo don’t have
them. The dust from the fields is controlled through the use of water hoses.

But to me, the most interesting point is that there is no homerun fence. The tall orange pool you see is the foul ball/home run pole. Near the
pole, you can see a mound of grass. This is the place where one field ends and another begins. When there are two games, there are line
umpires that monitor if the ball is a home run or only a double.

This park traces its origins to a great green space project to celebrate in 1940 the 2,600th year since
the founding of Japan. However, the plan changed with the outbreak of World War II, and the Japanese army’s Narimasu Airfield was built instead.
After the war, the site was administered by the U.S. military under the name Grant Heights. It was eventually returned to Japanese
administration in 1973, with about a third of the area secured for use as a park. Development of the surroundings commenced in 1981,
eventually to become one of the largest high-rise communities in Tokyo with 15 schools including primary, middle, and high schools, public
housing, public offices, and 12,000 Metropolitan apartment units.
