Another place to discover in Tunisia!
“Now we are free”, seems to say this tourist while raving in front of this wonder, to imitate the soundtrack of the famous film The Gladiator, this wonder is the Capitol of Dougga, site located in the North West of Tunisia!
UNESCO ranked this site on the World Heritage List in 1997, considering it to be the “best preserved Roman town in North Africa”. The city, which is in the countryside, is well protected from modern urbanism.
The site of Dougga is remarkable for its size – 70 hectares – the good conservation of its monuments and the historical wealth of its Libyan, Punic, Numidian, Romano-African and Byzantine past. Among the famous monuments of Dougga are the Libyco-Punic mausoleum, the Capitol, the theater as well as the temples of Saturn and Juno Caelestis.
The Capitol is a Roman temple of the second century, mainly dedicated to the protective triad of Rome: Jupiter Optimus Maximus, Juno Regina and Minerva Augusta.
