A breathtaking night in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
A shot taken a few hours from dawn, when the milky way was preparing to set behind the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Italian Dolomites), on a rainy and cloudy night.
Every time I visit this place and like it was the first, the innumerable photographic ideas excite every single click!

Everything has begun here … I’ve done my very first (climbing)steps on a Via Ferrata on this route long time ago and I’ve captured and worked out my very first Via-Ferrata-at-night-panorama here in this wall several years later. And hard work it is indeed to let the vision of such a panorama become reality!
There are several points on this climbing route that are worth to be the captured at night but this is definitely the most spectacular place in the wall and I always had dreamed to capture this spot. As I had taken my first Via-Ferrata-at-night-panorama several meters above that spot some years ago, I havn´t been able to properly fix the tripod in the steep traverse that leads to that overhanging roof yet. Now, some years later with a lot more experience I have learned some tricks to fix the tripod even on the tiniest protrusions 😉
The panorama shows the overhanging crux of the climb that is rated E (European Via ferrata difficulty level A-G) which is a rather hard and exhausting climb. Christina had to proof some „locking“ strength of her upper arm musculature once again. It had taken at least 35s to capture the pictures needed for the exposure bracketing (+ the time in between the different exposures) … sometimes I am really glad that I am standing behind the camera …hahahaha …whereas capturing that panorama still had offered enough challenges … (let alone the challenges of the post processing )
Attention: the following paragraph is very technical and only meant for those who are interested in these things. If you’re not, skip reading to the following paragraph!
I had to capture a lot of different frames to finalize the 2 row panorama with 5 positions each row. For the left 4 positions in the upper and lower row I needed to take 6 pictures to get the whole „monster“ of the huge depth of field (some inches in front of the front lens to infinity) another 4 for the exposure bracketing. The 3 positions left in each row could be realized with only 2 pictures for the focus stack. Another 6 for the focus stack for the additional „master-file“ with Christina and 4 for the exposure bracketing again and finally 10 pictures for the stack of the Milky Way. Although the stacking of the 10 pictures in Starry Landscape Stacker couldn’t evolve more details of the Milky Way here, as the spot in the wall is only 300m above the rather light polluted valley and because of the hazy and cloudy conditions that night.
That makes 72 picture in total and it easily took me 1.5 hours from setup to the last picture, so I am not sure at all if I therefor have to label the panorama as „time blending“ hahahaha …
